Liverpool declined the opportunity to sign a midfielder last summer.

Although sporting director Richard Hughes strengthened the Premier League-winning squad to the tune of £450m, the midfield remained untouched.

The load has been heavy on Arne Slot’s current options - including Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Curtis Jones.

All but Szoboszlai have suffered with injury trouble this season - and there is a sense that the Anfield club could do with some major reinforcements in the sector.

Liverpool hold talks over Adam Wharton

One name linked with a move to Merseyside for several months now has been Adam Wharton. The Blackburn Rovers academy graduate has gone from strength to strength since moving to Crystal Palace in February 2024.

The 21-year-old has won the FA Cup and Community Shield for the Eagles - and has also established himself in the England setup.

Wharton went to Euro 2024 as a squad member but looks set to become a mainstay at the 2026 FIFA World Cup under Thomas Tuchel.

The creative midfielder made his first start for the Three Lions in their 2-0 win over Albania on Sunday - delivering an impressive performance for Tuchel.

Summer 2026 deal for Wharton

Now it has been claimed that Liverpool have held talks over signing Wharton - that’s according to a report from DAVEOCKOP.

“Liverpool are holding initial talks to discuss signing Crystal Palace and England star Adam Wharton in 2026,” the report reads.

The outlet also admits that a move is far more likely for summer rather than January. Wharton is under contract at Selhurst Park until 2029 - meaning Palace are very well protected from a transfer fee perspective.

Change of shape incoming?

This season Wharton has shone in Oliver Glasner’s 3-4-3 formation at the heart of midfield.

The fact that he is now being considered as a Liverpool transfer target could indicate that Arne Slot and Richard Hughes are considering a change of shape for their starting XI.

Other signings - such as Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz have also got experience of this formation while defensive targets like Nico Schlotterbeck and Alessandro Bastoni also play in a back three.
