Liverpool can RUIN Crystal Palace with £80m midfielder deal
These are wearying times for Crystal Palace.
The South London side won the FA Cup last season and looked set for a major breakthrough. But they ended up selling Ebere Eze to Arsenal last summer with Marc Guehi joining Manchester City this January.
It looks like Jean-Philippe Mateta could be the next one out of the door with clubs in the Premier League and abroad looking at the French international.
A steep and sudden decline has left head coach Oliver Glasner throwing in the towel and he will also be leaving at the end of the season.
From the verge of breaking into the top flight’s elite band of clubs the Eagles are all of a sudden in crisis instead.
They have a job on their hands to rescue this season and convince other star players to stay in it for the long haul.
Liverpool chasing Adam Wharton
Liverpool however have got other plans - aiming to convince one key Palace midfielder to swap Selhurst Park for Anfield in the summer.
Adam Wharton, 21, has been a revelation since joining Palace from Blackburn in 2024. He went to Euro 2024 with England and was part of the Palace squad which won both the FA Cup and Community Shield honours.
Under contract until 2029 it is widely expected that Wharton will move on to bigger and better things.
Liverpool have been named as keen admirers - with Richard Hughes and Arne Slot eyeing the England FIFA World Cup hopeful as a potential improvement to their midfield.
Wharton will cost £80m
Now trusted Liverpool insider Lewis Steele reveals that Wharton is soon destined to leave Palace - boldly stating that Liverpool will be right there for his signature.
“After selling Guehi this month and with Jean-Philippe Mateta signalling his intention to leave, there is a widespread belief in the industry that Adam Wharton could be the next man to head for the exit door at Crystal Palace,” his report reads.
“Liverpool would be keen on the England international, according to sources, if a deal could be done with an £80m fee floated by some, though they would face competition from many teams.”
The likes of Manchester United and potentially Real Madrid could rival Liverpool in their interest so let’s hope Hughes has got enough in his armoury to convince the elegant midfielder to choose the Reds ahead of those other clubs.
