Liverpool to sign club hero for FREE next year

After losing players on free transfers Liverpool could benefit by resigning one of their own and bringing him back to the club.

There's been a lot said about the way Trent Alexander-Arnod left the club. He's not the first player though to leave on a free transfer.

In the past we've seen it happen quite often under FSG. Roberto Firmino left on a free, Divock Origi also left on a free, Georginio Wijnaldum as well.

The most infamous during that era after Alexander-Arnold was probably Emre Can.

Liverpool were on an upwards trajectory when he decided to no extend his terms and join Juventus instead.

Can left the club in 2018 and missed out on both a Champions League and Premier League triumph while struggling to make the squad at Juventus.

It was a disappointing time for the German international but he has reinvented his career in the last five years at Borussia Dortmund.

He's become an important figure in the squad leading them to the Champions League final in 2024 and also winning the DFP Pokal in 2021.

Now 31-years-old, he's entering the final year of his contract with Dortmund. By next summer he'll be 32-years-old when his contract expires and he'll be free to move onto pastures new, unless he extends.

If he doesn't, Liverpool should think about bringing the German back to Anfield. They don't often sign players over the age of 30, but it worked when James Milner was brought to the Reds, and he became a fan favourite.

Can had an extremely successful time at Liverpool and he's grown as a player since.

He's become more versatile. He can play as a centre-back and solve a key problem in that position with Liverpool struggling with their depth.

But he can also play in other positions. He can be used anywhere in midfield, whether that is the holding midfield or the no.8 role. In the past, he was even used as a full-back.

That versatility could make him a really valuable squad player for the club. At 32-years-old, he'd bring a lot of experience as well and he would not be expected to play week in, week out.

To fill in would be his role. In much the same way that was Milner's role when he was at the club.

Liverpool needed these versatility figures and since Milner has left, they don't really have anyone of his ilk. Can could be a really smart addition on a free.

Which is why the former Liverpool cult hero's situation is something to keep an eye on.

Are you having a laugh. Can is not a centre back. He was a DM and he wouldn't have the pace for the Premiership now. Can was always inconsistent. He had some great moments but then had some howlers. We need a proper CB. Guehi or Upemecano.
