Liverpool’s second season under Arne Slot has not gone to plan.

The Reds are the reigning Premier League champions, but they were out of the title race by Christmas and now find themselves in a tough battle for European qualification.

A combination of serious injury, bad luck and of course the untimely and tragic passing of Diogo Jota are caveats to the poor season currently being played out by Slot’s side, but there are clearly bigger issues with this team.

The Dutchman finds himself in a precarious position, with plenty of attention now focussed on when rather than if the head coach will face the sack.

Securing Champions League football will be vital for Slot, and a huge boost has just been confirmed.

Slot receives massive boost in Champions League race

Multiple reports have now stated that in order for Slot to continue in the Anfield dugout beyond the end of the season Champions League qualification must be achieved.

Liverpool are well in the race for the top four, but there are several teams close behind and it will not be easy to finish in the top four.

Luckily for Slot, Arsenal’s win over Sporting CP on Tuesday night means that an additional Champions League place is now guaranteed to go to the Premier League.

This means that whoever finishes fifth in the league will also qualify for the Champions League, a massive boost for the Reds.

Missing out on Europe’s premier competition would not just have lasting consequences for Slot but also have major financial implications for Liverpool.

The Reds currently sit fifth in the league, and finishing there will be a simpler task than trying to break into the top four.

It is also still possible for Slot’s side to qualify by winning the Champions League, but that seems unlikely.

Arsenal’s win will no doubt have put a smile on Slot’s face and the Dutchman’s chances of staying put in Merseyside may have increased.
