Liverpool surprise January transfer plans REVEALED in bid to save season
With the opening of the January transfer window less than two weeks away, all eyes are on Liverpool to see if they can save their season.
The Premier League Champions have struggled so far this campaign, and the prospect of retaining their title seems little more than a fantasy now.
There is still plenty of opportunity for success at Anfield however, with the Reds still fighting in the Champions League and FA Cup.
A worsening injury crisis at Liverpool is threatening to further derail Arne Slot’s side, but the January transfer window represents the perfect opportunity to get things back on track.
Liverpool could look for short-term cover in January
News of club record signing Alexander Isak’s leg break and subsequent surgery has caused panic among the Anfield faithful, with Liverpool now only having 12 fit senior players available.
Isak is facing a lengthy spell out and, as a result, it makes sense that Liverpool are assessing options for possible short-term deals.
Antoine Semenyo has been widely linked with a move to Merseyside, but there is plenty of competition for his signature and therefore the Reds have reportedly begun contingency planning.
According to transfer insider Indykaila, Liverpool are exploring deals for both Memphis Depay and Alexander Sørloth should a deal for Semenyo not materialise.
Depay, who currently plays for Corinthians, is reportedly open to a short-term deal and would be available for a relatively cheap transfer fee.
Indykaila also states that Sørloth is being targeted for a loan move despite his good form for Atletico Madrid over the last two seasons.
Will Liverpool sign a stop-gap?
Although it would seem uncharacteristic for Liverpool to bring a player in on a shot-term basis, it isn’t unheard of.
The club do typically tend to utilise big-picture, long-term thinking when plotting transfers, but the likes of Ozan Kabak and Arthur Melo have joined on loan deals in recent seasons.
Neither of those deals worked out particularly well for any party involved, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the Reds won’t try their luck again.
Hugo Ekitike is now Liverpool’s only fit striker and, if the Reds have serious ambitions in the Champions League, more depth is needed in January.
Both Depay and Sørloth represent interesting options if Liverpool can’t secure Semenyo, and a shot-term arrival could be exactly what Arne Slot needs to save the Reds’ season.
