One Liverpool star appears set to return to Liverpool's starting XI today. The Reds face Brighton in the Premier League.

Liverpool face Brighton later today in a massive game in the Premier League. Though, they'll all feel massive for the rest of the season as the Reds battle for UEFA Champions League qualification.

A terrible result against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend was followed by a sensational performance at home to Galatasaray as Liverpool booked their place in the Champions League quarter-finals. Can they take that form into the domestic league, though?

It'll certainly be interesting to see what Arne Slot does. He changed the system against Galatasaray, playing more of a 4-4-2 with Mo Salah partnering Hugo Ekitike up front.

That won't happen against Brighton, though, as Salah is injured. So who comes in for him?

The answer is almost certainly Cody Gakpo. He's the most senior forward who didn't start on Wednesday, while he fits into either tactical idea.

He might slot in as a striker alongside Ekitike. Or he could play on the left, with Florian Wirtz returning to the role behind the striker.

Either way, we'd be shocked if Gakpo didn't return to the XI.

Cody Gakpo: Situation Summary

Tactical Recall and Role

Arne Slot is likely to recall Gakpo to the left wing after the 26-year-old was benched for the recent 4-0 Champions League win over Galatasaray. With Salah ruled out due to a muscle injury sustained in midweek, Gakpo is the primary candidate to fill the attacking void, though he faces pressure from teenager Rio Ngumoha. Despite being a "key man" for Slot with 33 starts this season, Gakpo has faced criticism from fans for inconsistent output.

Transfer Speculation

Reports indicate Liverpool may "open the door" for Gakpo’s departure this summer if a substantial offer arrives, particularly from Bayern Munich. While he is contracted until 2030, his future is reportedly tied to Mohamed Salah’s status; the club is unlikely to let both attackers leave in the same window.

Season Statistics

In the 2025/26 campaign, Gakpo has recorded 8 goals and 3 assists in 41 appearances across all competitions. While he remains joint-third in the club's scoring charts, he has struggled for top form since a muscle injury in December.
