Liverpool star misses training ahead of massive Galatasaray clash
One senior Liverpool star has missed training ahead of a crunch clash against Galatasaray.
Federico Chiesa was missing from training on Monday ahead of Liverpool's trip to Galatasaray. The Reds will play the Turkish giants on Tuesday evening.
That's the away meeting for this tie, with the home leg at Anfield happening on the 18th. Of course, Liverpool travel to Turkey knowing they lost at the ground in the league phase 1-0.
It makes this one a very important clash if Liverpool are to get beyond the round in which they fell a year ago. That time they played the eventual champions, Paris Saint-Germain.
Liverpool are clear favourites this time, despite the league phase defeat. It appears they'll be another man down for it, however, with Chiesa absent.
It's presumed that the training absence will prevent the Italian from making the trip.
Federico Chiesa: Situation Summary
Training Absence and Injury Doubt
Chiesa was a notable absentee from Liverpool’s open training session at the AXA Training Centre this morning. The 28-year-old forward, who was part of the squad for the FA Cup win over Wolves on 6 March, now faces significant doubt regarding his involvement in the Champions League round-of-16 first leg against Galatasaray tomorrow, 10 March. Head coach Arne Slot is expected to provide a formal update on his condition during his media duties in Istanbul later today.
Transfer Speculation and Squad Status
Despite his popularity with supporters, Chiesa has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter under Arne Slot. With only one Premier League start this season and persistent links to a return to Italy, media reports suggest the club views him as surplus to requirements for the upcoming 2026/27 campaign. Clubs in Italy and Saudi Arabia are reportedly monitoring his situation, with Liverpool said to be open to a departure to facilitate further squad investment.
