Liverpool will once again be looking to strengthen this summer.

Arne Slot’s second campaign has been a disappointment, but the Reds will be hoping to challenge on multiple fronts next season regardless.

One of the most exciting targets Liverpool have been linked with in recent weeks is Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon, although a deal looks difficult to complete.

Liverpool and Newcastle’s relationship was tested last summer during the controversial transfer saga involving Alexander Isak, and the Magpies will likely be reluctant to do business with Liverpool again if they can avoid it.

The big issue for Eddie Howe’s side is that sales will be unavoidable this summer, and a recent announcement works in Liverpool’s favour.

Newcastle announcement is excellent news for Liverpool

It was announced on Saturday that Kieran Trippier, who was Newcastle’s first signing under their current owners, will leave the club upon the expiry of his contract this summer.

Newcastle’s ongoing financial problems are likely going to force them into some big sales this summer, and one of the names touted for a move away was Tino Livramento.

Trippier’s announcement leaves Livramento and Emile Kraft as Newcastle’s only options at right-back however, and Kraft has only played once in the Premier League this season.

It seems unlikely Newcastle would leave themselves with Kraft as the only option, so a departure for Livramento has become more complicated and could lead to Newcastle being more open to the sales of some of their other stars.

Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes are the three biggest stars Newcastle could sell, and Liverpool will likely be well in the hunt for Gordon.

Although the Magpies will be reluctant to sell to Liverpool again, they may not have much choice.

It is unlikely sales would be sanctioned for both Tonali and Guimaraes in the same window, that would leave Howe’s midfield crippled.

A deal for Gordon seems to have been made easier by Trippier’s announcement then, and the forward could finally make the move to Anfield this summer.
