Liverpool are ready to attack the market and sign another world-class star.

After the summer window Richard Hughes had he might be thinking about taking his foot off the gas pedal. Liverpool brought in a lot of players and the squad has completely transformed.

However the sporting director hasn't fully completed his task. The nature of his role is such that he always needs to concoct new ideas and find fresh ways to strengthen the squad.

Right now the biggest area where Liverpool need reinforcements is in the centre-back department. There's so much uncertainty in that position.

From how long Virgil van Dijk can sustain his performances before age inevitably catches up with him to what will happen to Ibrahima Konate when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Not to mention there's a question mark over whether Liverpool will go back in for Marc Guehi after missing out on him last summer.

In the meantime, Liverpool have to plan for the future. So, looking at the bigger picture perhaps the most important question Hughes has to find an answer to is how he'll replace Van Dijk.

It's an impossible task. Van Dijk has been the best defender in the world for the last decade. Replacing him is not going to be an easy task and just like with Mo Salah, there isn't anyone who is capable of filling his shoes.

But Liverpool still have to have a plan and that plan is becoming more obvious.

According to a report in Bild Liverpool are planning a 'transfer attack' to sign Nico Schlotterbeck, who they see as the long-term replace to Van Dijk's throne.

The report goes onto say that Schlotterbeck has emerged as a primary candidate for the Reds, and that they are making moves to sign the German international.

Strong in the air and composed on the ball, Schlotterbeck has a lot of qualities that you admire as a scout. He reads the game exceptionally well and he's relatively quick as well.

At only 25-years-old, he's in the prime of his career and he's still relatively young for a centre-back.

The only thing Liverpool will be reticent about is his recent injury record. Schlotterbeck missed 20 games for club and country last season and he has already missed two games due to injury in the current campaign.

Before that though he had missed just 34 games in his entire career, he's had multiple seasons where he played around 40 or more games.

His most matches came in the 2023/24 campaign when he made 48 appearances.

So while it will be a concern a little bit, his injury record isn't as bad as it seems. On paper, he's definitely the perfect target and it's a move Liverpool should explore.
