Liverpool may now be moving on from their pursuit of Marc Guehi.

Richard Hughes came so close to pulling off the perfect summer window for the Reds. In the end, the only piece missing from the cake was the Crystal Palace centre-back.

Liverpool came a hair's breadth away from signing Guehi. They did everything they could to secure his future, agreed a fee with Palace and terms with the player.

In the end, in the final hours of the window, Palace pulled the plug on the deal leaving the Reds helpless.

There's nothing Hughes could have done. But ultimately failing to sign Guehi has left Liverpool short in the centre-back department.

Without Guehi, and with the injury to Giovanni Leoni, which no one could have foreseen, Liverpool have just three available centre-backs.

For a team looking to compete on all fronts that is a dangerous situation to be in. We're a Joe Gomez or Ibrahima Konate injury away from this being a 'crisis' situation at Anfield.

So, it would make sense for Liverpool with the January window coming up to pursue a move for Guehi. But that doesn't seem to be in the club's plans.

In fact according to Rousing the Kop, the slate has been wiped clean and Guehi is now open to all possibilities. This means he's likely to wait out a move until the summer window and it's not guaranteed he will choose Liverpool with plenty of other suitors in for his signature as well.

In the meantime, the site claims Liverpool are making alternative arrangements. One of these includes contemplating a move for an exciting Brazilian star in Murillo.

The Nottingham Forest man has long been on the club's radar and it seems like Liverpool continue to admire what they have seen of him in the Premier League.

A very physically commanding defender, Murillo is still young and there is certainly a look to like about him. Unlike, Guehi, he's actually left-footed which might make him more of a suitable option for the left-sided centre-back role at the club.

At 23-years-old with a couple of seasons of Premier League experience already under his belt, Murillo does seem like the perfect alternative to Guehi.

The only downside is that Liverpool won't be able to sign him for free. They'll have to agree a transfer fee with Nottingham Forest, which might be a lot more difficult than it seems.

Considering what happened to Morgan Gibbs-White and his collapsed moved to Tottenham, signing anyone from Forest seems complicated at the moment.

Guehi should have been signed earlier in the window. An experienced CB was one of the most important players we needed. We have never fully strengthened our defence fully over the last few windows. This should have been done properly.
