Liverpool have entered the race to sign a South American star for £40m.

Improving the defence is expected to be a key focus for Liverpool FC this summer, even with the arrival of Jeremy Jacquet.

The young centre-back is seen as a promising player for the future, but Liverpool’s current defensive situation suggests that more additions may still be needed at Anfield.

One concern involves Ibrahima Konate, who is approaching the final stage of his contract. Talks over a new deal have reportedly not made much progress, increasing the possibility that he could leave the club. Interest from teams such as Real Madrid could also make a departure more likely.

If Konate were to depart, Liverpool would need to bring in another top-quality centre-back to maintain strength and depth in defence.

There are also longer-term questions to consider. Both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have contracts running until 2027, meaning the club could face further defensive changes soon.

Because of this, Liverpool are bound to target another centre-back this summer and it could come in the form of a £40m star.

Liverpool have entered the race to sign Joel Ordonez according to a report from Sports Boom.

Ordonez’s development and performances have positioned him as one of the most exciting young defenders in Europe.

The Reds could face competition from other European giants and Premier League rivals like Chelsea as several clubs view the Ecuador international as a player with significant potential.

His current club would likely demand a sizeable fee, reportedly around £40m, if they decide to sell, and the player himself is keen on a move to Europe, particularly Anfield.

Speaking to Gazet van Antwerpen Ordonez was asked about his future this summer and whether he could move onto a bigger club, and he replied by name-dropping the Reds and the Premier League.

“I hope so. It would be great if I could go to the Premier League. That’s my favourite league, which, given my size, should suit me well. As a child, I was also a big Liverpool fan,” Ordonez explained.

The report from Sports Boom claims that even if Konate stays, Liverpool view Ordonez as a shrewd investment.

Some may think that this could be pure gluttony for Liverpool but as we explained above the club's situation when it comes to defensive reinforcements does necessitate new arrivals.

That's before we even talk about the possibility of Liverpool potentially deciding to play with a back three, which is what Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni as well as Ordonez are all used to.

If that's the switch that Liverpool will make signing the Ecuadorean for just £40m makes so much sense. There are few centre-backs in the market with his experience and pedigree.
