Liverpool reach Federico Chiesa decision amid Mo Salah row
Liverpool could finalise a departure for Mohamed Salah in the January transfer window.
The Egyptian King is jetting off soon to the Africa Cup of Nations - but may have already played his final game as a Red.
Relations with the club are currently low - owing to an incendiary given following the Premier League champions’ 3-3 draw with Leeds last weekend.
He was left out of the squad for the Champions League game against Inter on Tuesday - and it remains to be seen if the 33-year-old returns to the squad for the weekend game against Brighton.
Chiesa struggles
You might expect that Salah’s Afcon-enforced departure - and potential subsequent sale - would open the door for Federico Chiesa.
At Liverpool since 2024, the Italian has established himself as a fan favourite but has been unable to make a decisive breakthrough to Arne Slot’s first team.
This season he has scored twice in the Premier League but has made ZERO starts in the top flight and Champions League. A reported illness kept him out of the Inter game and there is now speculation that he too along with Salah could be sold in January.
Il Giornale describes the 28-year-old as being at the “point of no return” owing to a lack of significant game time - and adds that two clubs in Serie A are keen to add the winger in the new year.
Chiesa 'inclined to return to Italy'
He “is increasingly inclined to return to Italy. Perhaps as early as January,” the report reads.
“That's why Napoli are always keeping an eye on him (Conte remains a big fan). But watch out for Roma: Chiesa would be perfect for Gian Piero Gasperini's 3-4-2-1 formation as a wide left-sided attacking winger with a right foot.”
Chiesa joined the Reds back in September 2024 for a fee that could reach £12.5m from Juventus. He struggled for form and fitness throughout his first season at Anfield but has earned the supporters’ respect with his workrate and endeavour.
Liverpool would surely not consider selling both Chiesa - who is under contract until 2028 - and Salah in the same window?
The only way that could be acceptable is if replacements were lined up on the right side of attack.
