Liverpool NIGHTMARE scenario takes giant step towards reality

Liverpool's nightmare scenario just became a little more real. Will they take action, though?

This season has not gone to plan at Liverpool. The Reds spent an outrageous amount over the summer and while they did recoup a fair chunk back from player sales, it stands as the biggest spend in their history.

That was supposed to improve on a title-winning team but it certainly hasn't developed that way. Liverpool have taken a good few steps backwards, struggling for form and putting in their worst period of results in 70 years at one stage.

It's something that piles the pressure on Arne Slot. A squad built for the Dutchman hasn't brought anything like the results Liverpool wanted, with performances not anything to shout about either.

Replacing him as head coach feels like a genuine option - and the right man is available. But only for now.

The Xabi Alonso situation

Xabi Alonso couldn't really be better-suited to the Liverpool job. He's a club legend who has found incredible success with Bayer Leverkusen and is experienced working at enormous clubs. The Spaniard is completely available, too.

He's even worked closely with Florian Wirtz, the player most likely to take over from Mo Salah as the star creator. It all adds up, should Liverpool move on from Slot.

But Liverpool are taking a risk by not moving now. Interest in Alonso will be enormous across Europe and we've said before that there's a real threat from Manchester City in case they need a successor to Pep Guardiola anytime soon.

Well, it appears those fears were on point. The Telegraph now reports that Alonso is fully expected to be on City's three-man shortlist as speculation grows that Guardiola will step down this summer.

They report of a 'growing sense' in Premier League circles that he will in fact move on after 10 years with City. Alonso would be on their shortlist to replace him - and very likely top of it, too.

It's a massive problem for Liverpool. Think back to 2015, for instance, when they decided to stick with Brendan Rodgers after a disappointing season.

Now imagine how that works out if Jurgen Klopp had taken a job at their rivals in the summer. That's the nightmare scenario Liverpool now face.

It seems they'll back Slot fully for now and possibly beyond the summer. It's a move that could cost them Alonso, and to City, no less. We're not sure they can truly afford to get this one wrong.
