Liverpool NEED to bring back club legend right now

Liverpool have a dream chance to bring back a club legend to fix Arne Slot's problems.

Right now the Dutchman is struggling to get things right and a lot of it comes from not having the right profiles at the back.

Slot needs more players who are comfortable at picking the ball up from deep and instigating attacks. Right now the centre-back department is depleted of options and it's something that the Liverpool head-coach desperately needs Richard Hughes to fix.

Liverpool cannot go into the second half of the season after January with just Ibrahima Konate, who at that point would have less than six months left on his contract, an injury prone, Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk.

Marc Guehi was someone they missed out on in the summer and it makes sense that they would wait for him to run down his contract at Palace and sign him on a free rather than paying a premium in January.

There is a temporary solution though.

Remember when Manchester United were struggling in midfield and Sir Alex Ferguson decided to convince Paul Scholes to come out of retirement?

The club legend returned in January and helped his side win the league title, fixing their problems immediately.

Now Liverpool could do something similar with a club legend of their own.

Joel Matip has been unemployed since he left Liverpool as a free agent over a year ago. He's retired from football and is enjoying his civil life.

Liverpool should put a stop to that temporarily and entice him to come back only for six months.

If ever there was a centre-back who was integral to Liverpool's build-up play, it was Matip. He simply controlled that area and was crucial in making forward passes as well as going on his rogue runs through opposition defences.

The Cameroonian international always ranked very high for progressive passes and for dribbles and take-ons attempted out of centre-backs in the league.

Matip is not that old yet either. He's only 34-years-old, the same age as Virgil van Dijk, so in theory he should still have it in him to give it a go for the next six months.

It's not a perfect plan but it worked for United with Scholes and it could work with Liverpool as well.

Matip's playing style and ability is exactly what this Slot side needs. Bringing him into the side could fix a lot of problems and help Liverpool lift the Premier League title.
