Liverpool's first-team squad have been riddled with injuries this season.

Giovanni Leoni managed to tear his ACL during his debut for the Reds and others, such as Jeremie Frimpong have spent more time on the sidelines than on the pitch.

The Dutchman was brought in to be Trent Alexander-Arnold's replacement with many fans thinking that it would be a like-for-like swap.

And, in the games that the former Bayer Leverkusen man has played for Liverpool, he's shown signs of being an impressive player.

However, since he's not really been able to have a decent run of games due to injuries, a lot is still unknown about the former Manchester City ace.

And now, in the Reds' time of need, it feels like they need the right-back to return more than ever.

Liverpool's defence has been one of their main problems this season.

Players such as Ibrahima Konate and Milos Kerkez have performed way below their usual standards with some of Virgil van Dijk's performances even being frowned upon.

However, since the Anfield outfit missed out on Marc Guehi in the summer, they've been left with just three natural centre-backs among their ranks after Leoni's injury.

And, since Gomez has been used at right-back in the Reds' last couple of games, Konate and Van Dijk have kept their place in Arne Slot's starting XI which has resulted in the club drawing against Sunderland and Leeds United.

And, since they don't really have many defensive options left to choose from, it's meant that the back four has more or less been choosing itself.

However, upon Frimpong's return from injury, the Dutchman will likely fit straight back into Liverpool's starting XI.

This would then mean that Gomez could move into his preferred position on centre-back alongside Van Dijk and perhaps even improve Liverpool's defensive line.

Solidifying the Reds' back four should be one of Slot's main goals before the January transfer window comes around, even though Mohamed Salah could be on his way out.

Why Jeremie Frimpong could help save Liverpool's season

Frimpong, who was once described as a "dangerous" player often managed to get in with the goals when playing for Bayer Leverkusen.

Indeed, he was used further up the pitch by Xabi Alonso but since he was more of a wing-back rather than a winger, he should be able to easily fill the void left by Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Bringing Frimpong back into Liverpool's starting XI would allow Gomez to take over from Konate and perhaps give the Reds some much needed confidence.

Van Dijk and Gomez have previously formed a formidable partnership and, if they're given a few games alongside one another, that form could slowly start to come back.

Since Frimpong is much better than the Englishman on the attack, his inclusion in the set-up could help solve some of the Anfield outfit's attacking woes, which at this point in the season, feels much-needed.
