Liverpool must take action: They can't afford to lose BRILLIANT one-of-a-kind talent

Liverpool have got to act fast. They risk losing a one-of-a-kind talent later this year and they can't afford to.

It's all change at Liverpool in 2026, much as it was in 2025. The Reds will continue to overhaul their squad, it seems, and a fair few players will leave.

Both Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson are out of contract this summer, for instance. It remains to be seen if they agree new deals.

Alisson Becker technically is, too, though everyone expects Liverpool to trigger their one-year option on that deal to extend it.

But one area that will be interesting to watch is Liverpool with their homegrown talents. They lost several of them in 2025, mostly by choice, and it's hit the squad quite hard.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was the exception in choosing to join Real Madrid but Caoimhin Kelleher, Jarell Quansah and Harvey Elliott were all moved on.

And if Liverpool aren't careful, they're going to lose yet another on in 2026.

Curtis Jones’s contract situation

Curtis Jones is a one-of-a-kind player in Liverpool’s first-team - a local, homegrown player. They don’t have any others, with Jayden Danns the next-closest, but hardly a first-team player at this stage.

But Jones could well leave soon. His contract will enter the final year this summer and he remains on wages that are a fair way below a regular first-teamer.

Paul Joyce has asked the question in The Times, too: will Jones want to leave for proper first-team football? As things stand, he only starts around 50 per cent of Liverpool’s Premier League games and Arne Slot doesn’t tend to count on him from the start consistently.

He’s also about to turn 25, however - it’s time for Jones to be a regular starter somewhere. That really should be Liverpool, who are starting to run incredibly low on homegrown talents.

Losing them not only tears some of the core out of the team but also limits you in squad building. Squads can have a maximum of 17 non-homegrown players - it makes complete sense to have some.

But Liverpool moved on most of their options last summer. Now they’re at risk of losing at least one more.

We’ll see what Liverpool decide to do but as Jones moves closer to the end of his contract, it does feel as though the club are about to make a big mistake.
