Liverpool MUST act now to sign long-term target amid potential bidding war

Liverpool have already let a few of their targets slip through the net this winter, and they could be about to lose another.

The Reds looked like they would be fairly busy in the transfer market after being linked with a raft of players earlier in the window, but this has not materialised.

Instead, it looks like they will only manage the signing of Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes, although he will not officially join until the summer.

Despite planning to add to their ranks at the back, Liverpool could still do with another defensive option in the here and now, with the Reds still linked with a few names.

However, they are on the verge of missing out on a long-term target and will need to act in the next few hours if they are serious about bringing him to the club, if not, he looks certain to go elsewhere.

Liverpool must act quickly if they want Joel Ordonez

Many names have been rumoured with a move to Liverpool in defence over the last few months, with Club Brugge's Joel Ordonez one of those mentioned the most.

The Ecuadorian has been a target for many clubs, but the Reds looked to be the favourites before agreeing a deal for Jacquet, although deadline day may have just changed things.

According to Miguel Delaney of The Independent, Crystal Palace have had a bid rejected for Ordonez, with the Eagles one of many Premier League clubs keen to sign him before the window slams shut.

Journalist Lewis Steele confirmed that Liverpool are still interested in the 21-year-old, but in the future rather than now, although this will have to change if they seriously want him.

The Belgian side are bracing themselves for more offers over the coming hours, with it looking unlikely that Ordonez will stay at the club beyond February 2nd.

Brugge want in excess of £35m for their star, making him a very affordable option, but if Liverpool are not careful, they will miss out on another target.

Liverpool should make a last-ditch attempt to sign Joel Ordonez

Although it looks like they will get Jacquet in the summer, Liverpool could still do with a centre-back regardless given that Ibrahima Konate looks set to leave on a free.

As well as this, Virgil van Dijk is getting no younger, Joe Gomez is unreliable due to injuries, and nobody knows how Giovanni Leoni will return after a long-term injury, meaning another addition would be smart.

The Reds are clearly a fan of Ordonez too after tracking him for a long time and even sending scouts to watch him, so for around £35m, it seems a no-brainer.

Palace see him as a replacement for Guehi too, suggesting they believe he is a similar profile, so with Liverpool already missing out on him, they can get the next best thing if they act now.
