Liverpool logic reveals MASSIVE Marc Guehi mistake

Liverpool have made a mistake in their Marc Guehi pursuit. The logic simply doesn't add up.

Liverpool haven't ended up with Marc Guehi in the January transfer window. It's a surprise, looking back, as things felt like a nigh-on certainty.

The Reds pushed hard to sign Guehi in the summer, eventually striking a deal in principle to end the window. Crystal Palace, however, ended talks right at the last moment as they couldn't find an adequate replacement.

But in January? They'd surely be able to and Liverpool could simply wait to push things through. Guehi would certainly be available with just a few months remaining on his contract.

And yet, he's now at Manchester City. Guehi went there instead, leaving Liverpool without the player they were once all-in on.

So why is that?

The Times is among those reporting that Liverpool simply didn't see the value in Guehi. With just a few months remaining on his deal, they couldn't justify it.

"The internal view is that Guéhi did not represent value at £20million, and £300,000-a-week wages, when he would have been available on a free transfer in the summer," writes Paul Joyce. "They do not sign short-term fixes and the players they now want are not available."

At first, this seems completely reasonable. But it doesn't actually make much sense - Guehi was never going to be available in the summer the moment City made their offer.

And so there was no overpay and there was no paying £20m for 'just' a few months of football. It was £20m to get the player you want or you're not getting him.

But surely Liverpool realised that? The idea that Guehi would be available for free at any stage was completely false and that was apparent quite a short way into the January window.

Either this was a real mistake in thinking and Liverpool have missed out on who they wanted, or they decided that Guehi wasn't the one for them. And the latter brings up more questions.

Is that because they're not challenging for the title and didn't see the need for an immediate signing? Is it because Ibrahima Konate isn't renewing his contract and thus the plans changed? It's difficult to tell right now.

But there's surely something else at play here - because the thinking doesn't add up otherwise.
