Liverpool lodge official bid for exciting first January signing

Liverpool showed they were able to splash the cash in the summer, but already all eyes are on the January transfer window.

The Reds have so far disappointed with their attempt to defend the Premier League title and pressure has been building on Arne Slot.

Despite a rough couple of months, Liverpool still find themselves in contention for a top four finish and are well-placed for a good run in the Champions League.

Attention has now turned to the transfer market, with the January window soon to open, to ensure that the Reds can enjoy a great end to a lacklustre season.

Liverpool lodge first bid of the January window

Although the window isn’t even officially open yet, the Reds have begun negotiations for a defender who could well become their first signing of 2026.

According to Sheffield-based outlet The Star, both Liverpool and Manchester United have made six-figure bids for Sheffield Wednesday’s 17-year-old defender Yisa Alao.

The report states that neither side have seen their bids accepted, but that Wednesday’s uncertain financial position could see the talented youngster leave.

Alao is yet to sign a professional contract with the club, and Liverpool are looking to capitalise on Wednesday’s off-pitch issues at the ownership level to secure another exciting young prospect.

Who is Yisa Alao?

Alao plays as a left-back who has broken into Wednesday’s first team this season, making his Championship debut last weekend in a 3-0 home loss to Derby County after finding himself as an unused substitute 11 times already this season.

The teenager has also played twice for The Owls in the Carabao Cup, coming off the bench in a first-round victory over Bolton and the third-round defeat to Grimsby Town.

Liverpool have garnered a reputation for signing some of England’s top youth talent over the last few years, with Harvey Elliott, Rio Ngumoha, Trey Nyoni and Amara Nallo all arriving at the club as teenagers from other English academies.

Although Alao wouldn’t be expected to make an instant impact in Liverpool’s first-team there is a clear path for the Reds’ youngsters to follow, and it may not be too long before his name is being announced at Anfield before kick-off.
