Liverpool are among a host of clubs interested in Brazilian wonderkid Gabriel Moscardo.

The 18-year-old defensive midfielder made his senior debut for Corinthians this summer and has represented Brazil at Under-23 level.

The Evening Standard reports that the Reds are keen on the player rated as one of South America's top talents, but will face strong competition for his signature.

Barcelona and Arsenal are also listed as interested. However, it is Chelsea who may be leading the race for Moscardo, having seen a bid of around £18m rejected last summer.

The piece claims that the Blues will revisit the deal in January when Corinthians may be more receptive to an offer.

Previous reports have suggested the Brazilian side would seek a record club-record fee of around €30m (£26m) to sell.

It is noted that Chelsea appointed former Corinthians chief scout Allyson Marins to their staff earlier this year – a move which may give them an advantage in the transfer race.

Moscardo has established himself as an all-action 'number six' in Brazil, but insists he has the ability to play a more advanced role too.

"Since arriving at Corinthians, I have always been the deepest midfielder," he told Globo.

"I like the position, marking, a position that demands a lot, especially at Corinthians, being a pure player, who runs a lot, who gives himself. But I also have technical quality. I can play as a No.8, I think I have the strength to arrive in the area to finish the plays."

Moscardo is not the only young Brazilian midfielder Liverpool have been linked with.

Copa Libertadores winner Andre Trindade looks set to get his big move this January. As reported by Anfield Watch, the Reds will be given priority for his signing, but whether they choose to make a move remains to be seen at this stage.
