Liverpool handed significant boost after contract rebel development

It is unclear how many of these names will remain at Anfield beyond the summer, but a recent update has given hope that at least one man will be sticking around for a while.

Liverpool set to agree deal with out-of-contract star

Ibrahima Konate has reportedly been in talks over a new deal for close to 18 months now.

The Liverpool hierarchy are clearly keen to see the Frenchman stay in Merseyside, but interest from Real Madrid and PSG has fuelled rumours that the defender could leave.

Now, a report from Spanish outlet Fichajes has claimed that Real Madrid have ended their interest in Konate.

The report states that a deal for the 26-year-old was too complex, and that Los Blancos will instead focus their attention on rumoured Liverpool target Maxence Lacroix.

Although Madrid’s interest in Lacroix could be perceived as a blow for the Reds, the fact they are no longer pursuing Konate makes an extension at Anfield more likely.

One of the main issues that has slowed negotiations is Konate’s wage demands, with the Frenchman wanting to be compensated in line with the likes of Liverpool’s highest earners.

An attractive offer from Real Madrid would have strengthened the defender’s negotiating position, but Los Blancos’ withdrawal makes things easier for Liverpool.

A new deal for Konate isn’t a guarantee, but things just became a bit simpler for Richard Hughes and Co.
