Liverpool handed major BOOST in chase for Premier League forward
With less than two weeks to go until the turn of the new year, all eyes are on the transfer market.
The window opens on 1 January, and many are expecting Liverpool to be active once again to try and rescue what has been a so far disappointing season.
The Reds are no strangers to making winter signings, but they generally only strike when an opportunity is too good to pass up on or when their hand is forced.
Both could be true in the case of Antoine Semenyo, who has a release clause active in the first weeks of the window and is also being pursued by several other Premier League clubs.
Semenyo release clause update
It has been widely reported that Semenyo’s contract with Bournemouth features a release clause of £65 million that activates at the start of January, but a new update has revealed he may actually be available for less than that figure.
According to The Guardian, Semenyo’s release clause actually sits at ‘slightly less’ than £65 million, but crucially that figure is inclusive of loyalty bonuses and agent’s fees.
In modern football the extra fees involved in transfers, especially agent’s fees, can sometimes stretch into the tens of millions and so for all of these extra fees to be included in the 25-year-old's release clause is a boost for Liverpool.
The signing of Semenyo would take the Reds’ spending for the season to almost £500 million, but The Guardian report states that Arne Slot is intent on bringing the Bournemouth man to Merseyside.
Will Semenyo join Liverpool?
The Reds will face fierce competition to sign Semenyo, who is probably the most sought after man in the Premier League right now.
Tottenham, both Manchester clubs and Arsenal have all been linked with moves for the Ghana international, but Liverpool will be confident that Semenyo can be the cherry on the cake for their attacking rebuild.
Mohamed Salah’s future at the club is in doubt and, even if the Egyptian King does continue at Anfield, he is away at the Africa Cup of Nations for a prolonged period anyway meaning Semenyo would walk straight into Liverpool’s XI.
With the news that his release clause sits just under the £65 million mark and is all-inclusive of fees, Richard Hughes may well deem Semenyo’s situation as the kind of opportunity Liverpool look for in the January window and the forward could well end up at Anfield.
