Liverpool give Arne Slot EXACTLY what he needed to save his job
Arne Slot has been under some real pressure this season. Liverpool have given him what he needs to save his job, however.
Just how much pressure was on Arne Slot on Wednesday? Probably more than people realise - after all, he was getting asked about Xabi Alonso in his Tuesday press conference.
That’s never a good sign. It shows that the idea of a coach being replaced has been completely normalised in the general conversation and that a potential successor has actually been found.
But it’s also normal that this pressure is there. He’s at Liverpool, for one, while performances this season haven’t been good. Not at all, really.
The Reds relied on late goals to kick off the campaign with some good results before suffering their worst run of defeats since the 1950s. While they went into the Marseille clash 12 unbeaten, their last four Premier League results had all been draws.
Above all, though, Liverpool just haven’t played well. They’ve had very few ‘routine’ wins this season and have struggled for control since the campaign kicked off. Arguably, they’ve struggled for that control since early 2025.
What Slot got on Wednesday, though, was important. It may save his job.
Marseille 0-3 Liverpool
Liverpool gave Slot exactly what he's lacked recently - a professional, impressive performance. This was the kind of win he's been wanting to deliver in which the team found themselves delivering on all fronts.
Three goals away from home and a clean-sheet. The latter being the missing piece from the 5-1 win at Eintracht Frankfurt earlier this season.
And even then, Frankfurt have been an average team this season while Marseille are enjoying a productive campaign. They'd beaten Newcastle United at home in the UEFA Champions League but Liverpool made them look distinctly average.
Slot can now point to this as a solid example of how good things can be. That's not only useful as fuel against those doubting him but also for the players.
Because if Liverpool play like this with any regularity, they'll look back to their best. So now the mission becomes getting them to play like this with consistency - no easy task, that.
Slot has had it tough lately where even the wins weren't even particularly impressive. This, though, gives him some strength and a solid platform to build on.
And that could ultimately be what saves his job.
