Liverpool getting closer to DREAM centre-back transfer
Liverpool have ramped up their efforts to sign a dream centre-back.
At this moment in time one necessary area where Richard Hughes simply has to bring in more reinforcements is the centre-back department.
Right now Liverpool are heading for a future where Ibrahima Konate could leave on a free transfer, Joe Gomez could be sold and in a year Virgil van Dijk will also be on the last few months of his contract.
That would leave the club with just one recognised centre-back who the club hope to have for the long-term - Giovanni Leoni.
And the Italian is not expected to be back for a while yet. In fact, it's moot whether he will even feature in pre-season in the summer.
So, Liverpool need centre-backs and they need them right now.
Liverpool's options are running out. Marc Guehi has joined Manchester City. Jeremy Jacquet could be heading to Chelsea.
Who else is left after them who is available and who is good enough to play for Liverpool?
Well one option who is Premier League proven is Micky van de Ven.
He is someone who was on Liverpool's radar even when he wasn't in the Premier League. The club's scouts tracked him at Wolfsburg but ultimately Liverpool decided not to pursue a move for the centre-back at the time.
Instead, he joined Tottenham where Van de Ven has established himself as a solid Premier League defender who is now also a regular at international level for the Netherlands.
What stands-out about Van de Ven is his pace. He is incredibly fast for a centre-back and considering Liverpool are struggling to defend transitions having a player who defends the channels as well as he does would be a great option.
It looks like there is genuine interest in the player, too. According to a report in the Daily Mail the Reds are developing a keen interest in the defender.
Van de Ven is reportedly ready to move on from Tottenham. He's 24-years-old and while he still has three years left on his current contract, it does feel like now is the time for him to move on.
Tottenham are going through a transitional period and they will be looking to make money on some of their better assets in order to rebuild the team.
The only question will be whether Liverpool would be prepared to pay the transfer fee that will likely be quite enormous. It all depends on just how serious Liverpool's interest is.

If there is one signing that should be incredibly high on Anfield's list, it's van den Ven. He's shown his worth since he came to the Premier League. He is not happy where he is now. He is a brilliant centre-back and if I could have one choice for new signings it would be him. He is literally VVD's successor!!! YNWA
