Liverpool get significant Michael Edwards update after Ajax technical director links
Michael Edwards was Liverpool’s sporting director from 2016 to 2022.
During his tenure alongside Jurgen Klopp, the Reds claimed all the top prizes in the club game - including the Premier League, Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup.
Edwards took the decision to step away - before returning to the fold dramatically in 2024. Only the executive did not return to Liverpool directly - instead he became Fenway Sports Group’s CEO of Football.
And with Edwards at the helm the Anfield club hired both Richard Hughes and Arne Slot - two inspired moves which paid off in the form of the 2024/25 Premier League title.
Edwards an Ajax target
One major reason for Edwards’ return was the possible establishment of a multiclub ownership model with Liverpool sitting at its heart.
That has not materialised as yet - with FSG failing to negotiate a deal for Getafe earlier this month. Of course if Edwards doesn’t see the Boston-based group set up their multiclub model there remains a slight risk that he will be attracted by a challenge elsewhere.
We’ve seen links to Saudi Arabia for example and earlier this week it emerged that he was under consideration by Ajax for a technical director role.
The Amsterdam giants are enduring a crisis season - currently under caretaker management by Fred Grim.
Ajax go for Cruyff as technical director
Former Liverpool assistant coach John Heitinga was sacked as head coach a few weeks ago - and technical director Alex Kroes is also going out the door.
The Eredivisie side are set for a massive administrative overhaul in the near future - with it reckoned that Edwards could lead the club out of the doldrums.
It now appears his FSG future is secure despite the rumours however with the news that Ajax have got Jordi Cruyff on the list as first-choice for their technical director position.
Cruyff’s links to the club are well-established - with the club’s stadium bearing his father Johan’s name.
Talks may well reach a conclusion very soon and Cruyff can get on with the most important task of naming a new head coach. For now Liverpool and FSG can rest easily as it seems that Edwards is now out of the picture.
