Liverpool get major Xabi Alonso warning: He's in talks with five clubs

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot finds himself under pressure.

The Dutchman was appointed as Jurgen Klopp’s successor back in 2024 - winning the Premier League title on his first try. But his tenure has lost its way completely during his second season in charge.

The defending champions are struggling just to re-qualify for the Champions League and have been humiliated in both domestic cups.

Champions League hopes meanwhile are hanging by a thread with Paris Saint-Germain on top at the halfway point of their quarter-final tie.

It has all led to speculation that FSG could opt to make a decision on Slot’s future come the end of the season. Under contract until 2027 the 47-year-old may well be relieved of his duties in the near future - especially if Champions League football isn’t secured.

Trusted club sources maintain that Slot is safe barring a Champions League meltdown but that hasn’t done anything to quieten down the rumours around potential successors.

Xabi Alonso linked once again with Liverpool

The one fans would want most of all is Xabi Alonso.

The 44-year-old Spaniard was reportedly in the frame to replace Klopp but opted to remain at Bayer Leverkusen for one more season following their 2023/24 unbeaten league and cup double campaign.

Last summer he joined Real Madrid as head coach but left his coach in January owing to a difficult relationship with star players. Now available without a contract clause Alonso is once again in the frame to move to Anfield.

But if Richard Hughes and his FSG paymasters intend to appoint the Champions League-winning midfielder then they are going to have to do it quickly.

Xabi Alonso talking to five clubs - including Man Utd and City

Because Football Transfers is now reporting that as well as being on PSG’s list of potential Luis Enrique replacements Alonso has spoken with FIVE clubs ahead of his managerial comeback this summer.

“Xabi Alonso has spoken to five different clubs as he prepares to return to management this summer,” the report reads.

“Alonso has emerged as a strong contender to replace Arne Slot if the Dutchman is sacked by Liverpool, while we have been informed that he has been earmarked as Paris Saint-Germain’s preferred successor to Luis Enrique if the 55-year-old departs amid significant interest from Real Madrid.

“Furthermore, sources have also told us that Alonso has already spoken to Manchester City, Manchester United, Benfica, Sporting CP and Porto ahead of this summer.”

Man City look set to move on from Pep Guardiola this summer as he considers his future while Man Utd are yet to make a decision over Michael Carrick’s long-term future.

Links to Portuguese teams are a surprise but Benfica may well lose Jose Mourinho to the national team following the FIFA World Cup and Francesco Farioli is on a lot of top teams’ radar following a solid campaign with Porto.

Liverpool will therefore not have a clear run at Alonso should they decide to pursue his signature. There is an emotional connection of course but Alonso is a man in demand and he won’t hang around forever.
