The eventual £35m bid that as made and accepted on deadline day sadly didn't result in the complete of a deal and subsequent reports have suggested that a move in January is not likely.

In effect, this means that Liverpool are willingly entering themselves into a dog fight for the 26-year-old's signature, which likely to be an incredibly competitive race, although the Reds might have just received a boost in their hopes of signing him, with one team now reportedly no longer interested.

Chelsea resigned to Guehi defeat

According to transfer insider Si Phillips, the Blues were previously looking at signing a centre-back in the summer and since the injury of Levi Colwill, that want has only turned into a need. However, the Eagles' captain is no longer a target because of an understanding within the market.

The latest report said: "There is an awareness within the club that the centre-back position can be improved still, and they are working to try and find [Enzo] Maresca the right profile that he wants.

"Marc Guehi is a player that Chelsea would like to sign, and he is universally like by everyone at the club. However, the club have pretty much walked from that one because he is dead set on joining Liverpool and was never that keen to return to Chelsea anyway."

As such, it appears as though Liverpool's main Premier League rival for Guehi's signature is no longer interested, primarily because of how deep the Reds are into negotiations with him.

After all, we know that he had engaged in the club's medical tests and was moments away from putting pen to paper before the last minute decision was made and taken out of his hands.

Of course, if the Reds do not consider moving for him in January, then another club could pay Crystal Palace a transfer fee to avoid him becoming free agent, but he's expected to see out his deal.

Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Barcelona will all be scouring over the next nine months and even though Chelsea might have pulled out, resigning themselves to the idea that he'll soon by Liverpool's the competition will rage on until a conclusion to the saga is reached.

For the moment, however, the Reds have been given a boost and it's a significant one as well.
