Liverpool get Harvey Elliott update amid reports of MLS agreement
Liverpool made several changes to their Premier League title-winning squad last summer.
Sporting director Richard Hughes spent £450m on new players - including British record deals for Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak.
As a consequence of so many new arrivals coming to Anfield, it was inevitable that there would be a clearout of some players already on the books.
We saw Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez leave as two high-profile departures - while Harvey Elliott was another outgoing deal wrapped up by Hughes.
Harvey Elliott's wasted season
The 22-year-old attacking midfielder left on a season-long loan to Aston Villa - with a view to a permanent deal. Elliott - an England under-21 star - would secure a £35m move to Villa Park should certain conditions be met.
It was reported that the playmaker would have to play a minimum of 10 matches for that transfer clause to be triggered. Right now that looks impossible with Elliott not playing in any game for Villa since October 2 and making only five appearances overall. 4
Elliott has been frozen out by Unai Emery and it would seem the Villans are very reluctant to make the move permanent. Liverpool are thought to be upset by the situation - and had banked on the transfer fee coming their way in 2026.
But now it looks certain that the club will be welcoming back the two-time Premier League title winner after a wasted season or else in January if his loan deal is cut short.
Destinations available to Elliott include MLS and Brazil
That represents a very frustrating outcome for Elliott - who harboured ambitions of a senior England breakthrough this season.
He’s got next to no chance of making the FIFA World Cup squad without first-team football - whether that comes at Liverpool in the second half of the season or elsewhere.
One factor complicating Elliott’s immediate future however is that he’s already played for two clubs this season. According to FIFA rules he would not be eligible to play for a third club in the 2025/26 season.
One avenue that could be open to the Englishman however is a move to a league whose season overlaps - such as MLS or the Brasileiro.
No MLS deal for Harvey Elliott
However a report on BBC Sport suggests that neither Liverpool nor Elliott are currently considering a move Stateside at this stage.
“He could move to a league that runs on a different calendar, such as Major League Soccer, but that is not being considered,” the report reads.
That spells problems for Elliott - who is either set for a season on the sidelines at Villa or else set to return to a Liverpool side who had no use for him even before the likes of Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike arrived.
