Liverpool FINALLY make contract offer to star player

Richard Hughes has made a contract offer to a star player at the club.

After all the drama of last season with Liverpool having Mo Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk on expiring contracts, the club's sporting director will want to avoid a repeat of that.

The situation at times felt like it spiralled out of control and ultimately Alexander-Arnold's decision tainted what would have been a really celebratory atmosphere come the end of the season.

That's not really a fault of Hughes. He did everything he possibly could to keep him at the club and in the end he also managed to tie down the other two to long-term deals. Arguably, those deals were probably more important for Liverpool, too.

However, despite what transpired last year, it feels like Hughes is running into the same problem again.

Ibrahima Konate's contract situation is very much up in the air. Andy Robertson also has a contract expiring at the end of the season.

For the latter, Liverpool have not really made a decision about his future. Robertson was seemingly replaced by Milos Kerkez this summer and could have left to join Atletico Madrid.

But he decided to stay and now he is back in the starting line-up at Liverpool. He's obviously not getting any younger at 31-years-old. Yet, it would feel premature to cut his time short at Liverpool this summer.

The Scotsman may just have a couple of seasons in him. Especially as a back-up, because he's so important in the dressing room.

On the other hand, Konate's future is even more uncertain. He has Real Madrid calling for him, just as they had done for Alexander-Arnold.

Unfortunately that is an alluring prospect for any player. Real Madrid simply hold hegemony when it comes to the game because of their status.

At the same time, Liverpool don't want to lose him. They are already short of centre-backs at the club and Hughes needs to bring in at least on more whether or not Konate leaves.

Not to mention there's the situation of Joe Gomez, who could also depart on a permanent move.

With so much change and upheaval at the club, it would make a lot more sense to tie Konate down to a new deal.

And it looks like the club is slowly trying to get to that stage. After being in negotiations with the Frenchman for over a year, they have finally made another offer to Konate's entourage.

That is according to Indy Kaila, who reported that Liverpool's offer for him arrived on Sunday afternoon. Real Madrid have also been informed of it.

Whether that offer is going to be accepted or not remains to be seen. But it's definitely a step in the right direction.
