Trent Alexander-Arnold has got a £30m problem coming at Real Madrid
It’s been a season to forget for Trent Alexander-Arnold at Real Madrid.
The 27-year-old completed a dream move to the Bernabeu last summer - with the Spanish giants paying £10m ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup.
There were question marks against the Englishman straight away however with Madrid media questioning the signing over fitness concerns.
He missed the Club World Cup semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain due to injury - causing the initial alarm - and he has been laid up for quite a lot of the season so far.
Trent got injured back in September during a Champions League game against Marseille - sidelining him for two months. And not long after his comeback he suffered another muscle injury in early December - and is only just returning to fitness.
Trent's Madrid future in doubt
Between injury spells however there has been plenty of speculation that Madrid could opt to cut ties with the £280k per week right-back owing to his lack of rhythm.
Trent hasn’t always played well when he’s got in the team with Dani Carvajal being preferred in the early stages of the season until his own injury problems resurfaced.
The player has been described as being disappointed owing to broken promises at the Bernabeu - with Xabi Alonso being sacked in January.
And Madrid too would consider a sale according to various reports - with Manchester City and Newcastle both reported to be interested in bringing him back to England.
Madrid planning to sign £30m Wesley from Roma
Alexander-Arnold could be one step closer to that return with the news that Madrid are pressing on with plans to sign a new right-back.
Defensa Central is claiming that chief scout Juni Calafat is quite taken with the idea of signing Wesley Franca for £30m from Roma.
The former Flamengo full-back only joined the Italian side last summer but the quality of his performances have now alerted Madrid.
Amid doubts that Carvajal will sign a new, one-year contract extension it looks like Madrid are going to take out an insurance policy by signing a new option in the position.
That in turn could spell bad news for Trent - especially if he cannot put his injury troubles behind him.
He looks set for a run in the team under Alonso’s successor Alvaro Arbeloa - but he can consider himself warned that Madrid will have no qualms about signing a new competitor for his place come summer.
