Liverpool face the prospect of losing Mohamed Salah for a significant portion of time this season.

The Egyptian King is due to join his national team for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations - which kicks off in Morocco on December 21.

The tournament concludes on January 18 - meaning Salah could miss up to a month’s worth of action over a busy part of the campaign.

Salah requires AFCON cover

Arne Slot has been reluctant to use Federico Chiesa from the start of matches this season - despite the Italian scoring two Premier League goals to date.

We can expect the 28-year-old to feature a little more when Salah leaves to AFCON - but the forward’s absence will open the door to another underused Liverpool forward.

That’s according to a new report in the Athletic - which suggests Rio Ngumoha is going to get more game time with Salah away with Egypt.

Arne Slot not using Rio Ngumoha

Ngumoha has been short of first-team football in recent weeks - with Arne Slot using Cody Gakpo and Florian Wirtz as his left-wing options.

It was initially believed that the 17-year-old would step into the gap left by Luis Diaz’s departure. But Ngumoha has only had a half-hour of Premier League football this season and none at all since October.

He has started only twice in other competitions - during Liverpool’s ill-fated EFL Cup run - but now he could be set for increased involvement.

Ngumoha will replace Salah

“Slot’s decision to use Wirtz on the left against Real Madrid and Manchester City knocked Ngumoha further down the pecking order, but Salah’s departure to AFCON in mid-December could offer more opportunities until he returns,” the report reads.

However the report also adds that Ngumoha’s next start may not come until the new year when Liverpool face their first FA Cup match of the season.

Much excitement was created by Ngumoha’s signing when he left Chelsea as a 15-year-old for Anfield.

The attacker has risen quickly through the age-group ranks for club and country in that time - putting pen to paper on a first-ever pro deal earlier this season.
