The future of Luis Diaz has been one of the most contentious topics of discussion at Anfield this season.

It has looked at times as though the Colombian’s departure was almost certain, but now that seems less likely.

Diaz wants a new deal at Anfield, that is clear. The 28-year-old currently earns substantially less than his positional peers at Liverpool and he wants parity.

The contracts of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk were obviously the priority for Richard Hughes and co, but now those extensions have been confirmed Diaz could be next up.

The winger has impressed at times for Liverpool this season, but what does Arne Slot think about his contract being extended?

Arne Slot gives Luis Diaz contract verdict

The Colombian still has two seasons remaining on his current deal, but Diaz’s wage demands could see him push for a move away before his contract can run down.

If Liverpool want to keep hold of the 28-year-old they will have to pay up and, according to TBR Football, Arne Slot feels that Diaz is ‘worthy’ of a new deal reflecting his importance to the team.

Diaz is the Reds’ third highest scoring player in all competitions this season and has come into great form in the last few months, recording five goals and four assists in his last 11 Premier League matches.

According to reports, the Colombian is looking to roughly triple his wage with a new deal and that is believed to have been a sticking point in earlier negotiations over a new deal.

Will Diaz get his new deal?

Although Slot doesn’t appear to have much involvement in the actual negotiations over new contracts, his seal of approval on Diaz will likely help get things done a little quicker.

If the club know the Colombian is a genuine part of the head coach’s plans going forward, they are more likely to meet his demands.

There are a number of teams interested in signing Diaz if an agreement can’t be reached, including long-term admirers Barcelona and sides from the Saudi Pro League too.

Diaz’s form to end the season has shown that he still has a lot to offer in the Premier League, and that will likely push him to the front of the queue of players ready to negotiate a new deal.

Ibrahima Konate and Conor Bradley are due new contracts too, so it may not be a matter that is resolved before the conclusion of the season.

It remains to be seen if Diaz will extend his deal at Anfield but, if Arne Slot does truly believe he is worthy, a new deal feels increasingly likely.
