Insider shares chances of Julian Alvarez coming to Liverpool
Liverpool have long maintained an interest in Julian Alvarez. The Argentina striker, 25, has been on the radar since his days as a young player at River Plate.
Of course it was Manchester City which Alvarez chose as his first European destination back in 2022. The forward enjoyed a stunning spell at the Etihad under Pep Guardiola - winning a treble as well as the FIFA Club World Cup.

But Alvarez was deemed surplus to requirements back in 2024 - and that’s when the Reds would have liked to make another move for him.

The deal broke down however and instead Alvarez was on the move to Atletico Madrid. He scored 29 goals in total during his first season under Diego Simeone following a move worth up to €95m.
Liverpool face Atletico this week
But Alvarez was reported to be unhappy at Atletico’s inability to mix it with the big boys - both in Spain and in the Champions League - casting his future once again into doubt.
If there was an opportunity to strike for Alvarez then Liverpool might have taken it - but opted to go for other forwards in the shape of Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak.
It still may be the case that Richard Hughes reaches out to Atletico and Alvarez’s entourage over a deal for 2026 - but that depends on whether the Spanish capital club can go closer to the big prizes.
Alvarez will NOT be coming to Anfield
In the meantime Simeone takes his side to Anfield for the first match of the Champions League league phase. It will come as a relief for the Reds to not have to face Alvarez on this occasion - he’s been ruled out of the occasion due to a knee injury.
“JULIÁN, 'OUT' FOR LIVERPOOL,” runs an announcement from El Chiringuito - citing journalist Iñaki Villalón De Linos.
“The Argentine forward has knee discomfort and will not travel with Atleti.”
Alvarez unhappy at Atletico?
It’s been a sluggish start to the season for Alvarez - scoring only once in four LaLiga outings to date.
August brought news about the player’s reported regret over joining Atletico - so it is worth keeping an eye on his situation throughout the season.
If he fails to shine under Simeone then Anfield would be the ideal place for him to reinvigorate his career and compete for the biggest trophies.
