Liverpool headed into the international window with several forward players on the treatment table.

Alexander Isak is of course now on the comeback trail following his broken leg but this international window came too soon for the Swede.

Joining him on the sidelines is Mohamed Salah with the Egypt international unable to answer his nation’s call following injury against Galatasaray.

Liverpool saw Hugo Ekitike pull up with a dead leg over the weekend against Brighton although he looks set to play some part for France this week.

Even junior options like Keyrol Figueroa and Jayden Danns are injured currently and the last thing Arne Slot needs is more bad news on the injury front.

Injury confirmed for Chiesa

Unfortunately that’s exactly what he got on Monday morning with the Italian football federation confirming Federico Chiesa will be heading back to the AXA Training Centre.

The 28-year-old was a surprise inclusion in Gennaro Gattuso’s squad to face Northern Ireland in the FIFA World Cup playoff semi -final - his first national team appearance in two years.

But he was in no condition to play - a devastating blow for the winger who is enduring another miserable season for Liverpool.

The semi-final and possible subsequent final of the playoffs were supposed to represent a reset for Chiesa and a chance for some precious game time before an intense run-in.

Chiesa is running out of chances

The winger has only made one Premier League start this season with Arne Slot restricting him to bit-part roles. A couple of solid performances for Italy could have served Chiesa well and given him an opportunity to stake a claim for a late-season starting berth.

Instead it’s another significant blow for the £12m signing - and it could be a fatal one. If Chiesa cannot prove his worth between now and the end of the season there is a very real chance he will be told to move on.

Earning £150k per week until 2028 Liverpool are not getting any value out of the Euro 2020 winner and clubs in his homeland would love to sign him.

Juventus, Roma and Napoli are all thought to be keen on Chiesa - who has lost out on another chance to show what he can do.

Unfortunately for the fan favourite it looks like he is running out of chances and the writing is on the wall for his Liverpool career.
