Ex-Chelsea star named as potential REPLACEMENT for Arne Slot
Liverpool aren't looking at sacking Arne Slot, but plenty of replacements for him are being named.
Whenever a manager of a head coach oversees a period of bad form, pressure mounts. It's the natural cycle of heading up a football team. Losing six matches in seven is a serious problem.
Throw in the fact that £450m was spent on transfers in the summer, and you've got a pressure-cooker that will go off eventually if things don't start to change. Although one way to buy yourself some credit is to have won the Premier League in the season prior. It's not alarm bells quite yet.
However, that hasn't stopped reports suggesting different potential replacements for the Dutchman.
Slot's replacement lies in South America
According to an article from Fichajes, the best candidate to replace Slot is former Chelsea star Filipe Luis, who is currently managing Flamengo in Brazil. His transition from player to coach has been so successful that he's been placed 'in the orbit of several European clubs'.
This is Luis' first ever senior managerial post and he's only been in charge since 2024, working on a one-year deal before he could be assessed properly for a long-term contract. Suggestions that Luis is capable of leading Liverpool to a more stable position appear to have been widely over-estimated.
Furthermore, the intel on Slot's situation appears to have been somewhat misguided, as the Aston Villa game on Saturday evening is supposedly likely to 'put Slot's exit into acceleration', when most of the fanbase have a completely different view of things. Liverpool rarely make drastic calls.
Nonetheless, the Brazilian coach is seen as 'a real option' for Liverpool if Slot is to be dismissed.
It's hard to say with any confidence how Luis would go if given the keys to the Reds' squad, simply because there appears to be a lack of evidence concerning his ability to succeed in Europe, never mind the Premier League and the Champions League. The task ahead of him would be enormous.
Slot won the title last year, and has gained a lot of credit on that basis. but let's also not forget how Jurgen Klopp did with the same team before the Dutchman arrived, finishing fifth and then third. The Reds succeeding like they did came out or nowhere, and now we're in a period of transition.
Criticising the head coach feels reasonable and by no means should Slot have a free pass, without any consideration of the team's performances. But he needs time and he should be getting a lot of it.
We'll have to wait and see whether Filipe Luis' name comes up in future discussions, but it feels like a particularly rogue shout given the circumstances around him, and Slot-out calls feel premature.
