Doubts raised in Liverpool boardroom over Arne Slot

Arne Slot is in the midst of his most difficult spell as Liverpool head coach to date.

The 47-year-old won the Premier League at the first time of asking in the 2024/25 season - etching his name into the history books.

It was expected that Liverpool would get even BETTER this season - considering that only Federico Chiesa was added as a new signing ahead of the title-winning campaign.

Ahead of the 2025/26 season, £450m worth of new talent was added to the squad.

The likes of Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz arrived on blockbuster British-record deals and other acquisitions were made in the shape of Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Giorgi Mamardashvili and Giovanni Leoni.

Arne Slot under pressure

But the new-look squad is yet to truly gel. And Liverpool have been defeated in each of their last four matches - three in the Premier League and one more in the Champions League.

Slot has sent out awkward-looking teams and his selections have been brought under scrutiny. Now, according to a report in Fichajes, alarm bells are ringing in the boardroom over the former Feyenoord boss’ ability to relieve the pressure.

“Criticism has even reached the top brass of the locker room,” the report reads. “Slot noted that "when you lose four times in a row," a new challenge arises, perhaps the biggest of his career.

“The club is questioning Arne Slot's ability to manage the transition with a squad primed for immediate success, not rebuilding.”

Liverpool having Arne Slot doubts?

A lot of money was spent on the squad last summer and a payoff for that investment is to be expected.

Liverpool eased their way to a title win last term and questions are being raised internally over the level of performance this term - according to the report.

“Liverpool's board is demanding that Arne Slot stabilize his performance before the project's continuity is jeopardized. Big-money signings must start performing.

“Arne Slot's challenge is daunting. If he fails to revive Liverpool in the coming weeks, his initial legacy could be diluted and the club would begin a new era.”

Right now there is no question about the Reds sacking Slot but he could do with alleviating the pressure with a sequence of big, convincing wins.

No doubt he would like to extend his stay beyond 2027 - his current contract expiry - and earn the pay rise that would go along with a new deal.

But for now he must turn it around and demonstrate his title-winning credentials all over again.
