Liverpool headed into the international window on the back of yet another defeat.

Arne Slot has now presided over 10 defeats in the Premier League this season - more than in any other campaign for a decade.

The defending champions are fighting just to hold onto their place in the Champions League - and the Brighton defeat on Sunday won’t have helped Slot's cause.

Sporting director Richard Hughes oversaw £450m worth of spending last summer but the club haven’t managed to get any better.

New signings have either been injured or are not gelling together well. And Slot is also suffering due to a drop in output from players like Mohamed Salah and Alexis Mac Allister.

FSG are now reported to be ready to take action as soon as the current international window.

Slot to be sacked within days

According to Spanish source Defensa Central Liverpool have reached out to Xabi Alonso and would be interesting in appointing him imminently.

The report states that Slot - already under scrutiny - could lose his job in a matter of days with Alonso now primed to take over.

“Arne Slot's position at Liverpool is increasingly under scrutiny, and he could be sacked in the coming days,” the report reads.

“Following the defeat to Brighton during the international break, there's a chance he won't continue in his role. And Xabi Alonso is the leading candidate to replace him."

Xabi Alonso lined up to take over

“Initial contact has been made by the Reds," the report continues. "They wanted to ascertain his intentions regarding his future.”

For his part Alonso is ready to jump back into management and does not intend a sabbatical following his Real Madrid exit.

“He wants to return as soon as possible,” the report reads.

Alonso, a former midfielder for Liverpool and Real Madrid, was broadly seen as the no1 candidate for the Reds’ hotseat after Jurgen Klopp left.

But he stayed another season at Bayer Leverkusen - where he worked with Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong.

Liverpool moved onto Slot with Alonso, 44, taking the Real Madrid job last summer. It now looks inevitable that a reunion at Anfield is on the cards for the 2005 Champions League-winning midfielder.
