Liverpool deal for Marc Guehi now HANGING by a thread

Liverpool will beat some fierce competition if they're to sign their ideal defender.

The need for a new defender on Merseyside isn't anything new. An attempt was made to sign a player in the summer, and the subsequent injury of Giovanni Leoni has only exacerbated the issue.

However, the plan appears to remain unwavering - not to spend money unnecessarily on a player who will be available for free at the end of the season. From an economic perspective, the Reds' stance makes a lot of sense, but from a sporting perspective, it's really quite hard to fathom.

The race to sign free agents is always complex and fierce, there's far more uncertainty involved.

Inter plot sneaky Guehi approach

In the case of Marc Guehi, the Reds will quite rightly feel hopeful about their chances of signing the player, since he had completed most of his medical with the Reds on deadline day before the plug was pulled on his move from Crystal Palace last summer in the dying embers of the transfer window.

However, in the months since, we've seen a lot of European giants announce their interest in the Englishman including Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Real Madrid, to name just a few. The chance to sign a player of his calibre on a free transfer is not to be missed. As such, we have competition.

There's nothing to suggest that Guehi has changed his mind, but the pool of options available to him has now increased significantly. There are a lot more factors for him to consider before he decides.

And while it's unlikely that he'll be allowed to leave Oliver Glasner's squad in January, it's now being reported that Inter Milan are considering the possibility of beating the competition to his signing.

In a report from Gazzetta, it said: "The only way [to avoid an auction] could be to anticipate his landing in Italy in January, perhaps aiming for a broader operation in which to include [Yann] Bisseck."

The Italian club are said to be unwilling to get embroiled into the chaos for Guehi, and offering Crystal Palace a transfer fee to sign him early would certainly eliminate that possibility. As mentioned, Liverpool aren't going to entertain that idea, but Inter seem more than up for it.

It is pinpointed that this is merely a suggestion for Inter, as a way to solve their upcoming defensive crisis, as Stefan de Vrij and Manuel Akanji are out of contract in the summer. But if the idea is something that Inter heavily consider in January, then Liverpool's hopes will be hanging by a thread.

For now, there's no reason to doubt Richard Hughes' plan, but the risk is there for all to see.
