Liverpool could abandon £65m star after MASSIVE change of plans

Liverpool could make a dramatic move to abandon one £65m star. It would be a bold move as they head in a new direction.

Liverpool have some massive decisions to make over the next few months. Their summer overhaul didn't work, breaking up a title-winning squad and replacing it with something that doesn't quite function properly.

There's more work to be done, in other words. Liverpool will want to retool slightly - or possibly even more than that.

It all depends on what direction Arne Slot wants to head down. This squad was built with a system in mind, after all: 4-2-3-1. But recent weeks have seen Slot move away from that into more of a diamond formation.

In fact, Liverpool have essentially ditched playing with wingers over their last few games. That's a dramatic change from how they've played since 2016.

And it's a decision that could have ramification on their transfer plans. If this is how Liverpool will play going forward, they're not going to be chasing wingers.

What to do about Antoine Semenyo

Liverpool have been strongly linked with a move for Antoine Semenyo. The BBC are one of those reporting as such - he’s a player the Reds like a lot.

He’s also one that will almost certainly move in 2026. Semenyo has a £65m release clause in his contract, eliminating any need to convince Bournemouth to sell.

However, does this one actually make sense for Liverpool still? They’re finding success with their diamond-esque formation, packing the middle of the pitch and allowing their full-backs to have full reign of the flank.

It gets players closer to the strikers, prevents so many opposition transitions through the middle, and seems to suit the players. Three goals against Leeds United, a win at Inter and a 2-0 win against Brighton - they’re finding the net and seem a little more solid.

Semenyo wouldn’t really fit into that plan. Now, perhaps Liverpool aren’t ready to totally give up on the 4-2-3-1 and feel Semenyo could help make it work.

We’re not so sure, though. It feels like the Reds are onto something with the latest tactical tweaks and a big-money move that takes them away from that could be disastrous.

So it might be time to abandon the Semenyo plan. It would be one thing if he was a world-class talent who clearly improve the team but he’s not quite that.

The Ghanian is instead someone you’d hope would arrive and move up a level. We’re not sure that risk is worth upsetting this current trajectory.
