The transfer window is edging closer and rumours are heating up.

There are so many question marks about what Liverpool's plans are. This is pretty much uncharted territory under this new leadership.

Richard Hughes was still getting settled when he walked in through the doors last summer. But this time around with 12 months under his belt he's much better qualified to handle whatever comes next.

The expectations are high as well. Even though Liverpool are Premier League champions, there's work to be done. Most notably, in attack where a no.9 is of great importance.

Arne Slot clearly doesn't fancy any of his current options. He's been forced to use Luis Diaz in the position over Darwin Nunez and it's obvious he wants a new player.

Elsewhere there are defensive frailties to sort, too. A centre-back and a left-back might be needed. Meanwhile, Liverpool also need to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold.

READ MORE: A Dutch right-back could be heading to Anfield, and it ISN'T Jeremie Frimpong

For this, Jeremie Frimpong has emerged as the frontrunner. Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Frimpong is one of the main players on the shortlist.

Around the same time, Paul Joyce writing in The Times said Frimpong was a leading candidate for Liverpool.

These are two of the most well connected transfer experts when it comes to the world of football and Liverpool.

The fact that both are saying that Frimpong is not just a target but one of the main targets makes this move a genuine possibility.

It's one that simply makes sense, especially because he has a release clause in his contract worth €35m - which makes him an absolute bargain.

Many Liverpool fans have scoffed at the mention of Frimpong's name. There is a genuine hostility towards the possibility of signing the Bayer Leverkusen man, which is baffling.

Frimpong is 24-years-old and he's the best player in the world when it comes to his position. Simply put - there's no one better than the Dutch international.

When you look at wing-backs and their offensive production over the last two seasons, Frimpong is head and shoulders above every single one of his positional peers.

This season he has registered 17 goal contributions in all competitions - more than any other right wing-back in his position. Meanwhile, last season he registered 26 goal contributions which was again more than any other right wing-back in his position.

If you don't believe that signing a player of that quality, who stands out among wing-backs so much, for a paltry sum of around £30m is a good deal then I don't know what else to say.

EXCLUSIVE: Richard Hughes targets TWO Serie A stars for Liverpool

Frimpong is the best right wing-back in the world, and he could be coming to Anfield. There's nothing more exciting than that.
