Liverpool can finally sign Moises Caicedo after three years
Liverpool can finally sign Moises Caicedo after three years in the making.
Because of the club's midfield situation, the Reds are going to be looking out for potential midfield arrivals in the transfer market this summer and there's an opportunity that is simply too good to refuse.
Curtis Jones could be on the move as he enters his final year under contract. There is also uncertainty surrounding the futures of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.
Both have a contract until the end of the 2027/28 season but all have also been negotiating for a renewal for over six months no to no avail and it remains to be seen just what will be the outcome of the two dealings.
There has been no progress made yet, anyway. Mac Allister is on the radar of Manchester United and Real Madrid. Szoboszlai is also courted by the Spanish giants.
The Argentine is probably the most likely to leave, given negotiations with him are the least advanced. But it would not be a surprise to see one or the other leaving for pastures new this summers as the Reds continue their rebuild in midfield.
This means Liverpool have to think about their midfield in a very strategic manner.
And this coincides with a time that could see Caicedo becoming available, who the Reds always wanted to sign three years ago.
When Szoboszlai and Mac Allister came in, Liverpool had a completely different plan as to who they wanted for the holding midfield role.
It wasn't supposed to be Ryan Gravenberch.
It was supposed to be Caicedo. Liverpool made a club record bid for him and it looked like he could be heading to Anfield.
But ultimately, the Reds didn't get the deal over the line. Caicedo became a record-breaking transfer in the Premier League, joining Chelsea.
This was a record Liverpool broke by bringing in Alexander Isak.
But now there is a chance for Liverpool to sign Caicedo again.
Chelsea are a mess at the moment. They have been given a transfer ban at academy level. On the pitch they have been thrashed by Paris Saint Germain and it looks like the club's model is completely falling apart.
Caicedo is now entering his prime years and that long-term vision at Stamford Bridge is dismantling in front of his eyes.
There's a chance Chelsea could miss out on Champions League football next season. There's also a chance that they could miss out on Champions League football even if they qualify.
There's also a chance that apart from those financial losses that come with missing out on Europe's elite competition, Chelsea could face even bigger financial problems.
According to reporter Rob Harris, the government are set to sue Chelsea for £2.5 billion.
And the situation could get even worse according football finance expert Mo Chatra, who broke down just how devastating losses the Blues made and the ramifications they could face - including being banned from Europe by UEFA - on his X thread.
If that happens, it could put Chelsea in a really vulnerable position.
But regardless, the door is now ajar. Given Chelsea's recent form and need for sales, Liverpool could finally sign Caicedo. He won't wanting to be playing for a club with so many difficulties and potentially not even being in Europe's prime competition.
Equally, Chelsea may have no choice but to sell him in order to make up for losses.
Either way, Caicedo should firmly be on Liverpool's radar.
