Liverpool have been dealt a bombshell transfer blow. A £45m star has made his choice.

Liverpool are yet to dip their toes into the transfer market but there's a belief that they'd like to. And that belief has only become stronger after Jeremie Frimpong went off against Qarabag.

The Reds don't have any senior right-backs and even their backup option, Joe Gomez, is currently out. The defensive crisis was already underway from the moment Giovanni Leoni was ruled out for the season, in truth, because it left Liverpool short and reliant on unfit players.

Finding someone who can operate as cover feels absolutely vital. Liverpool, though, will not move for anyone who isn't a part of their long-term plans.

But that doesn't mean they don't have a name lined up. The only problem is that they're not sure he'll head to Liverpool.

Jeremy Jacquet makes his choice

Fabrizio Romano reported earlier in the window that Liverpool would 'love' to sign Jeremy Jacquet. However, Rennes weren't so keen on selling their star during the winter window.

It seemed that the Reds would need to wait until the summer. But it's now looking less and less likely that this will be an option to them.

And that's for two reason. Firstly, and most important, Sky Sports report that Jacquet has chosen a move to Chelsea. Secondly, Chelsea are trying to push a deal through before the January window shuts.

It seems that Liverpool will need to move on, then. A deal will likely cost the Blues around £45m (per Christian Falk) and while we're sure the Reds would pay that for someone they see as an ideal signing, that doesn't matter for much if he'd rather play for Chelsea.

So we're not entirely sure where that leaves Liverpool. It's all well and good waiting for the 'right' signing but if that signing doesn't pick you back, you're left with nothing.

That's the situation Liverpool risk being left in this winter.
