Liverpool completed a club-record deal for Florian Wirtz earlier this summer. The German playmaker, 22, came on board from Bayer Leverkusen for a fee that could reach £116m.

That sum represents a British-record outlay - with Liverpool head coach Arne Slot convincing Wirtz that he will be a key part of a new generation at Anfield.

Wirtz established himself as a modern-day club legend at Leverkusen - helping the club win their first-ever German top-flight title in 2023/24 and adding a DFB-Pokal (German cup) for good measure.

He played almost 200 times for Leverkusen across five-and-a-half years and Liverpool are expecting a similar kind of impact from his time on Merseyside.

Liverpool's Adidas deal commences

Wirtz has already featured along with his new teammates during the club’s 2025/26 preseason campaign - scoring in the 3-1 friendly win against Yokohama F.Marinos on Wednesday.

He did so with an unusual squad number - 58 - previously utilised by Ben Woodburn. Liverpool opted to give all their new signings temporary squad numbers for the preseason fixtures - and the club also used their 2024/25 Nike kits.

The new kit deal with Adidas becomes active on August 1 - and the new, permanent squad numbers have been sorted out too.

Liverpool give No7 shirt to Wirtz

Wirtz has been handed a precious Liverpool heirloom - the fabled No7 shirt - last worn by Luis Diaz.

The Colombian has left his shirt number vacant following his move to Bayern Munich - and Arne Slot has wasted no time bestowing the legendary number on his new crown jewel.

The calibre of player to have starred in the Liverpool No7 shirt is unrivalled. Ian Callaghan - who has played more matches than any other player in Liverpool history - frequently wore the No7 while racking up the honours under Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley.

Then came two MORE of the greatest players in the annals of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool's legendary No7

Kevin Keegan, a Ballon d’Or winner, is another No7 who stacked up the honours.

And what can you say about Sir Kenny Dalglish? The Scottish forward is many people’s pick for the greatest player EVER to wear the Liverpool shirt.

His impact on the club is incalculable - both as player and a manager - and he will always hold a special place in fans’ hearts.

More modern incumbents for the No7 shirt include Steve McManaman - perhaps the best Liverpool player of the 1990s - as well as Luis Suarez.

Don’t forget James Milner - who represented the club with distinction - winning major honours along the way - using the historic shirt.

And so Wirtz is primed to join the pantheon of Liverpool legends. This shirt comes with a weight and an expectation. Wirtz has got the talent and the quality to live up to its previous owners.
