Liverpool are interested in signing Aston Villa defensive midfielder Douglas Luiz, according to Express Sport, as cited by Anfield Edition's Twitter account.

The report states that the Reds see the 23-year-old as a potential long-term replacement for Fabinho. The story further adds that Luiz could be available to buy in the summer due to his contract situation.

The Brazil international's current deal expires in just over 12 months. Luiz possesses a current market value of €35 million.

Anfield Watch Verdict

Luiz is a talented footballer. The defensive midfielder has been averaging a WhoScored player rating of 6.89 across the 2021-22 Premier League campaign.

Luiz does possess end product in his game. He has scored one goal and registered three assists in 22 top-flight appearances this season, which is not bad for a defensive player.

Back in 2020, former Arsenal forward Ian Wright made a very big statement regarding Luiz, which further highlights his quality.

As quoted by the Football Transfer Tavern, the 58-year-old said the following: “Someone like Douglas Luiz, he is ready to be one of the best midfield players in the Premier League. He is so underrated."

Luiz is also young. The Brazil international is only 23 years of age, which means that his career is only just beginning. It would be fair to assume that he is far from the finished article.

We would not be against the club making a move for Luiz. He would certainly add depth and quality to Liverpool's midfield.

Fabinho won't be around forever. With that being the case, signing a player of Luiz's profile would be a good move by the Reds.

But, only time will tell if Liverpool are genuinely interested in bringing the midfielder to Anfield. For the time being, we are going to sit back and enjoy the remainder of the season.
