Liverpool are rebuilding their defence, and that process will continue this summer.

A deal is already in place for Jeremy Jacquet to move to Anfield in the summer, and Giovanni Leoni, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez have all arrived at the club within the last year.

Despite the big investment that has already been made into Arne Slot’s backline, several defenders could be on the agenda in the summer.

Ibrahima Konate and Andrew Robertson are both into the final few months of their current deals and there is also uncertainty over the future of Joe Gomez.

Now, it appears Liverpool are gearing up for an expensive transfer showdown with one of their biggest rivals over a sought-after Premier League star.

Liverpool and Manchester United to battle for Murillo

Nottingham Forest’s Brazilian defender, Murillo, quickly became one of the most talked about names in the Premier League after his arrival.

The 23-year-old has impressed over the last 18 months and now a number of the division's top teams are preparing to test Forest’s resolve.

According to a report from Spanish outlet Fichajes, it is Liverpool and Manchester United who are leading the race for Murillo, who Forest value at around €80 million (~£70m).

The report also states that the price could be pushed up by a bidding war between the two rivals, something that Liverpool will want to avoid.

Several other reports have linked the Reds with a move for the defender in recent weeks, and it is clear that there are more than two clubs interested in the Brazilian.

Murillo is viewed as a potential long-term successor to Van Dijk at Anfield, and this could encourage Slot’s side to continue to pursue a deal even if the price does increase.

With £60 million already committed to the signing of Jacquet, another £70+ million outlay for Murillo would represent a big chunk of the Reds’ summer budget.

The Red Devils are likely to be a team Liverpool are competing with directly for league position next season, so losing such a talent to them would be a double blow.

If Manchester United and Liverpool truly are the two clubs leading the race for Murillo, then an exciting transfer battle could ensue, and supporters will be hopeful the young defender ends up at Anfield and not Old Trafford.
