Liverpool’s midfield has undergone serious evolution since Jurgen Klopp won the Premier League title in the 2019/20 season.

Whilst remanence of that title winning side are present right throughout Liverpool’s squad, the midfield is almost entirely different.

Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch all joined Liverpool in the same summer and now make up the core of Liverpool’s midfield.

The only player who made it through the Reds’ midfield evolution was academy graduate Curtis Jones, who initially broke into the first-team in Klopp’s title winning season.

Since 2020, initially under Klopp and now under Arne Slot, Jones has developed into a more mature and reliable player, and now he’s proving why he’s one of the league's best.

Curtis Jones has established himself

Jones played 46 times in Slot’s maiden campaign, helping his boyhood club to secure their second league title in five years, and he has continued to prove his worth this season.

The 24-year-old has featured in every game he’s been available for so far this season and is starting to cement his place at the base of Slot’s midfield.

Despite coming through the academy as an advanced midfielder and a winger, Jones has found success playing a deeper role for Liverpool in recent times and has now become a key part the Reds’ system.

Jones’ success has also been recognised on the international stage. The Scouser made his England debut in November 2024 and has gone on to represent the Three Lions six times since.

Jones is one of the league’s best

Not only is Jones showing himself to be one of Liverpool’s best options in midfield, he’s up there with the best in the league.

According to DataMB, Jones’ 20.72 forward passes completed per 90 minutes is the best of all midfielders in the competition.

Manchester City’s Nico Gonzalez is Jones’ closest competitor, and he only records 15.47 per 90.

This is proof that Jones is a key part how Liverpool progress the ball, and it is clear to see why he has become so indispensable for the Reds.

If the 24-year-old can continue to perform at such a high level, it won’t be long until he is widely recognised as one of the best midfielders around.
