Last-ditch midfielder move is on the cards at Liverpool

The transfer deadline is right around the corner now. Liverpool could yet sign a midfielder.

Liverpool haven't signed a single senior player in this transfer window. That's a surprise, given they were both struggling with form and injuries ahead of it opening.

Yet they've stuck to their guns and decided the 'right' player just hasn't been available. They backed out of a deal for Marc Guehi, of course, believing the price is too high. There doesn't seem to be an immediate alternative - not while Rennes are refusing to sell Jeremy Jacquet, anyway.

But there's an increased need to find someone this month. Even more so than when the window opened. Liverpool have lost Conor Bradley for the season and now Jeremie Frimpong is out, too.

Joe Gomez should be back relatively soon but he's actually also injured right now. It creates a difficult situation for Arne Slot who doesn't have a senior right-back. Even his backup option is out.

Liverpool, though, are reluctant to sign a new one. But maybe a midfielder is the answer?

Liverpool's late moves

Liverpool don't want to sign a right-back because there's no long-term need to do so. Bradley and Frimpong are both great players and young enough to hold down the role for a long time.

They don't want to sign a centre-back because they both have long-term targets who aren't available there and there's uncertainty over what the position will look like in the summer. Ibrahima Konate will be out of contract, while Virgil van Dijk enters the final year of his deal.

But is a midfielder the answer, then? Slot has been quick to move options there over the season - Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Curtis Jones have featured at right-back. We also know that Liverpool will try some sort of restructuring of midfield in the summer as they're busy offering contracts to their senior options.

On top of that, it's the only area that Liverpool didn't touch last summer. They're not in the middle of plans, nor have they just signed someone for the position whose role would be immediately under threat.

And so there's perhaps a bit more flexibility in the position. Signing someone who can play midfield and free up others to operate at right-back could be the easy solution that Liverpool want - one that doesn't interrupt their defensive plans long-term.

Now, whether that means going big on a star or a younger squad player is really their choice. But with so much focus on a defensive transfer, we think a midfield signing is absolutely on the cards, too.
