Liverpool have seen off competition and completed the signing of Jeremey Jacquet, although he may had already hinted that Anfield was his preferred destination.

The Reds were very quiet throughout the January transfer window and let a few of their previous targets move elsewhere, but they were not going to let the same happen to Jacquet.

Liverpool have signed the Frenchman in a deal worth up to £60m, although he will not join until the summer, but they made the move early to fend off interest from the likes of Chelsea.

At one point, it really looked like this transfer could have gone either way, although the Reds have got their man in the end despite the nervous wait.

However, Liverpool should have perhaps been a bit more relaxed about the situation as Jacquet himself may have already hinted in the past that he would have preferred a move to Anfield, and he has got his wish.

Jeremey Jacquet named Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate as his idols

Everyone knew Liverpool needed a centre-back due to a lack of depth, but they also need one due to their uncertain future.

Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate have been excellent for the Reds over the years, but the captain is getting no younger, and the latter looks set to depart on a free.

Jacquet is the man who they think can fill the void, though, and based on the fact the 20-year-old named the two Liverpool stars as his idols, he might just be the perfect fit.

"As a defender, I really like [Virgil] Van Dijk, and more recently [Ibrahima] Konate," he said to L'Equipe in October when asked who his idols were.

The Rennes defender is a mix of the two as well, possessing the calmness on the ball of van Dijk, while the speed and strength of Konate, making him a solid new recruit.

Ibrahima Konate might be more inclined to stay at Liverpool after signing Jermey Jacquet

Although it looks like Konate will leave on a free in the summer, the arrival of Jacquet might just turn his head slightly and cause him to stay.

Not only will he have another Frenchman in the team, but as a duo, these two could be the future of Liverpool, as well as of the French national team.

If they can create a formidable partnership, they might just be favoured more as the pairing for major tournaments, with their understanding with one another giving them the edge.

Of course, keeping someone like William Saliba out of the national side will be a tough task, but it might just be possible if they stick together for club and country.
