Jarrod Bowen replacing Mo Salah is classic Liverpool
Jarrod Bowen to replace Mo Salah at Liverpool? It's a classic move from the Reds - and FSG.
Mo Salah will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, bringing an end to nine wonderful years at Anfield. He departs as one of the finest we've ever seen grace Anfield - a true all-time great.
So how to do you about replacing such a player? The reality is you don't. No one is going to reach the heights of Salah and it's useless to even try.
Instead, things need restructuring. Perhaps you can change the system in such a way that there's far less importance on Salah's position - the greatness can come elsewhere.
Liverpool made a move in that direction by signing Florian Wirtz last summer. The German is earmarked as the next 'leader' of the Reds' attack and Salah's exit moves him forward in that direction.
And that change is why we think it's worth keeping an eye on Jarrod Bowen. The West Ham star is expected to leave the club this summer, especially if the club are relegated from the Premier League.
Bowen has been a long-time favourite of the Reds', who had him down as a potential replacement for Salah back in 2022. Well, despite the fact he's 29, there's a chance it happens this time around and it would be classic Liverpool.
Go back to the last time that the club's dominant player left. It was Philippe Coutinho in 2018 and his ultimate replacement was £13m Xherdan Shaqiri, signed from relegated Stoke City.
Prior to that it was Steven Gerrard in 2015 and Liverpool's replacement was a free transfer for James Milner. Before that it was Luis Suarez in 2014 and the Reds signed Mario Balotelli for £14m as his successor.
Those are the three times that the dominant force departed under FSG. All three times, they ultimately signed a cut-price, cost-effective replacement.
Now, to be fair, the plan worked with Shaqiri and it did with Milner (even if it was only because Jurgen Klopp took the job a few months later). Maybe it can work again? All we'd say is keep an eye on the idea of Bowen.
Jarrod Bowen: Situation Summary
England and World Cup Audition
Thomas Tuchel has included the West Ham captain in his 35-man squad for the upcoming friendlies against Uruguay (27 March) and Japan (31 March) at Wembley. With 20 caps to his name, these matches are seen as a final high-stakes audition for Bowen to secure his place in the 2026 World Cup squad. He has been a consistent presence under Tuchel, appearing in four of the recent six matches during England's perfect run.
West Ham Captaincy and Relegation Fight
Bowen currently leads a West Ham side embroiled in a fierce battle for survival. The Hammers sit 18th in the Premier League, level on points with Nottingham Forest in 17th. Despite the team's struggles, Bowen has been their primary attacking outlet, recording 10 goals and 7 assists in 33 appearances this season. He recently became the club’s all-time leader for goal involvements in the Premier League, surpassing Michail Antonio with 103.
Liverpool Interest and Salah Succession
Following Mohamed Salah’s confirmed departure, Bowen has again emerged as a potential target for Liverpool. Transfer insiders list him on an eight-player shortlist to succeed the Egyptian. However, the move has divided opinion; club legends like Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher have expressed admiration for Bowen’s work rate but questioned if his "ceiling" is high enough to replace Salah’s world-class output. His contract with West Ham runs until June 2030, but a summer exit is widely expected if the club suffers relegation.
