Xabi Alonso now looks destined to join Liverpool.

Arne Slot’s position at the club looks increasingly untenable after the humbling 4–0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup on Saturday afternoon.

Yet another defeat after two weeks of a build-up promising to show something different felt like a definitive breaking point in a season that has steadily drifted off course.

Conceding four goals in such a high-stakes match and in such quick succession not only exposed a structural weaknesses, but a lack of identity and resilience that Liverpool sides have historically prided themselves on.

This was Slot’s 15th defeat of the season, a number that simply cannot be ignored at a club with Liverpool’s expectations.

More concerning than the tally itself is the manner of these defeats. Performances have often appeared disjointed, with little evidence of a coherent tactical plan. Against City, Liverpool looked reactive rather than proactive, consistently second-best in key moments. That points to a manager who is struggling to impose his ideas at the highest level.

Equally troubling are signs of declining morale within the squad. Body language on the pitch suggests a group low on confidence and belief, raising questions about Slot’s man-management. When players no longer seem fully committed or responsive to the manager, it becomes incredibly difficult to reverse a downward spiral.

With results worsening and no clear path to recovery, it’s hard to see how Slot can turn things around. Saturday’s defeat didn’t just underline the problems, it confirmed that his time at Liverpool may already be up.

For much of the start of the season when Liverpool went on a run of nine defeats in 12 games, Slot had a saving grace because of what he had achieved and because there was no body available in the market who could feasibly replace him.

But that is no longer the case. Xabi Alonso is right there. The fans, leaving the Etihad were singing his name as they booed of Slot's side and now it feels like there is a huge turning point happening at Anfield.

Man City confirmed that there is no going back for the Dutchman. This is the end. Much like Brendan Rodgers, Slot has fallen out of favour and luck.

It also confirmed that just like back then when all the fans wanted Klopp, Alonso is now inevitably heading to Liverpool. Sooner rather than later, he will be a manager of the club.

There's no going back now. This is what is going to happen.

The Spaniard knows Liverpool inside and out. He is far better equipped to handle adversity and his achievements are superior to that of Slot prior to coming to Anfield.

Alonso after all took a side close to the relegation zone in the Bundesliga and made them invincible knocking Bayern Munich off their perch without a single defeat to win the title.

His tenure at Real Madrid was short but it was ended prematurely.

Underlying metrics actually had Real Madrid leading the La Liga table based on expected points over Barcelona when Alonso was sacked.

He had an over 71% win success rate during his time in Madrid. We'd love to see anything even remotely similar at Liverpool.

Alonso is a better manager than Slot. He deals and has dealt a lot better at breaking down opposition low-blocks and he has implemented far better pressing structures than the Dutchman at a much higher level in Leverkusen compared to Slot's work at Feyenoord.

Not to mention, the big reason why Alonso is much better suited to Liverpool is because he knows how to get the best out of the club's current stars.

Florian Wirtz enjoyed his best football under Alonso. It was the same for Jeremie Frimpong.

The recruitment team will be well aware of these achievements and it's why fans need to get ready because knowing how smartly the club operates, it's now obvious Alonso is coming to the Reds.
